Board of Education

The nine-member Clarke County Board of Education is the official governing body for the School District. Its responsibilities include policy making, budget approval, evaluation of the superintendent and other duties as prescribed by law. Board members are elected to four-year terms.

Clarke County Board of Education Meetings
The Clarke County Board of Education holds its regular monthly meeting on the second Thursday of each month. The Board’s agenda-setting meeting is held on the first Thursday of each month. Normally, the Board of Education does not hold an agenda-setting or regular meeting in July.

Both the regular monthly meetings and the work sessions begin at 6 p.m. The work sessions are held in the Athens Community Career Academy Media Center located at 440-1 Dearing Extension, Athens, GA, 30606, and the regular monthly meetings are held in Room 66 at the Athens Community Career Academy. In addition to aforementioned meetings, the Board of Education’s Policy Committee meets once a month. Policy Committee members meet on the second Monday of each month at 4 p.m. in the administrative conference room of the Clarke County School District’s Administrative Offices. The Board of Education’s Finance Committee meets quarterly and the board’s Property Committee meets as needed.

Announcements are posted on the School District’s cable television channel (Channel 182 on Charter Cable) and provided to the media when special meetings are scheduled. All Board of Education meetings are open to the public, except those in which specific personnel, property, or legal matters are discussed.

Public Input
Citizens are encouraged to contact us when they have a question, a concern or a suggestion. We encourage you to learn about issues that affect your children and tell us what you think.

You can review the proposed policy at our online policy manual. Under “Pending Policies” you can review policies the Board of Education is considering. Click on the link for a particular policy. You can leave your comments in the comment box at the end of each policy.

Call our 24-hour telephone hotline at (706) 546-7721. ext. 306 and leave a message. You do not have to leave your name.

At a Board of Education Meeting:

Citizens are encouraged to attend Board of Education meetings. If you would like to speak at a regular Board of Education meeting (the second Thursday of each month), you must call the Superintendent’s office at (706) 546-7721. ext. 18230 before 4:00 p.m. on the meeting day to reserve a place on the agenda. To ensure all citizens have an opportunity to address the Board, there is a three-minute time limit on each speaker.
