Wendy Turner, a second grade teacher at Mount Pleasant Elementary School in the Brandywine School District, is Delaware’s 2017 State Teacher of the Year. Governor Jack Markell made the announcement tonight in front of 500 invited guests at the Dover Downs Hotel and Conference Center in Dover. Teaching was not Turner’s original plan. After starting her career working in a large public accounting firm, she found herself unfulfilled, she said in her application: “I just did not want to work in corporate America anymore … being a parent greatly changed my perspective and was a significant factor in influencing my deep desire to do something meaningful.”
The Delaware Department of Education will host a second round of community conversations in November and December to collect public input on the first draft of the state’s plan under the new federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
The U.S. Department of Education recently announced Delaware’s honorees for the 2014 and 2015 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). Four teachers from Cape Henlopen School District, Capital School District and MOT Charter School received the highest recognition that K-12 mathematics and science teachers can receive for outstanding teaching in the United States. Four additional teachers – two in math and two in science – are also this year’s 2016 PAEMST finalists for Delaware, earning a chance to become a 2016 math or science awardee later this year.
The Delaware Department of Education is seeking public comment to the proposed revisions and additions to the Performance Framework utilized to ensure that each and every Delaware charter school is serving students with a high-quality public education. The Performance Framework sets the academic, organizational and financial standards by which all Delaware public charter schools are evaluated. These frameworks are used to inform the community, the department, and school stakeholders about school performance and sustainability.
